Pemi Bridge House

A Success Story

Kristy Long with children Anthony and Jasmyn
Pictured are Kristy Long and her children Anthony and Jasmyn, who were residents of Pemi Bridge House and are now thriving in their own Plymouth apartment. Anthony graduated from Head Start and entered kindergarten at Plymouth Elementary School in September 2004. Kristy is gainfully employed, has proudly received her GED, and has worked hard to provide for herself and her family. We are VERY proud of Kristy and her family.

A Resident's Own Words

The following was written by a resident, kind enough to share her experience here at Bridge House.
I am a 48 year old woman who just moved into the Bridge House two weeks ago. This is not my first time in a shelter, but this is my first time in a shelter where I have felt accepted from the first day by staff and residents.
I have always had a self - esteem issue, so when I knew I was going to be going to a shelter again I was feeling depressed because I had to leave my apartment that I have had for over two years. I thought to myself, here I go again back to a shelter. I had no idea of what was facing me moving to Plymouth because I was leaving all the people and things that had made what I thought were a comfortable life. I was also upset because I had to cancel my surgery for a total knee replacement.
Well, here it is two weeks later and I already have my new doctor, set up an appointment to get some dental work done that is long over do, and best of all my surgery has been rescheduled for the end of February. I know my recovery is going to be painful but I also know I am going to be with people who are going to encourage me to do what I have to do.
I have so many things that I am looking forward to doing after my recovery. I want to get a job, get my license back, and start saving some money so that my dream of owning a log cabin can become a reality. The Bridge House will always have a special place in my heart and when I get on my feet again they can count on me to return and volunteer.
I am just totally amazed at how far I have come in a two week period and how much better I feel about myself as a person.
